Jeonju Hanok Village
Moju is Jeonju's mulled rice wine — makgeolli simmered slowly with cinnamon and jujube. You'll scoop the ingredients from their basket, stir the pot as the steam rises, and, once it cools, bottle it and write today's date on the label. Under 1% ABV, so it's fine if you don't drink.

What is Moju
"After straining makgeolli, there's this thick lees left over. Throw a few things in, boil it, and it turns sweet." That's how the owner's husband remembers it from childhood. People in Jeonju drank that sweetness next to a bowl of soup, even at breakfast. Most of the alcohol cooks off; what stays is cinnamon and warmth. The name comes from a mother who boiled it for a son who drank too much — "mother's wine."
Outside Jeonju, almost nobody knows it. When the owner, pregnant with her second child, asked for moju in another city, she got "What's moju?" That was the day she realized: this exists only here.

What's in the basket today depends on the season: beetroot in spring, ginseng in summer, gardenia and tangerine peel in autumn.

How it works
One hour. Your hands do the work; we stay right beside you.

Cinnamon, candied ginger, jujube, licorice, astragalus. Read the little tags, then choose: traditional or this season's.

Add everything to the makgeolli, lid on, and within minutes the cinnamon reaches you first. It simmers twice; feel free to look out the window. This is the part guests call the most relaxing hour of their trip.

Stir in the brown sugar, let it cool, and fill your 500ml bottle. Pick one of six labels, write a line and today's date in the blank, and slide it into its case. The best part? You walk out holding it.
Labels
Moju means mother's wine, so we left one line on the label empty. Who it's for, what today was, or just your name. Overseas guests tend to pick the traditional label with the big Korean lettering; younger guests go for black or pink.

You also pick one of six cap stickers and five box stickers — two of them are evening primrose.

The name
I don't drink. But I always loved the moju my sister-in-law brewed for church gatherings — the way her mother and grandmother made it, for more than twenty years. "You should sell this," I told her. In July 2022 that sentence became a small room facing the old Gyeonggijeon shrine.
The name is Moju Yeo. Yeo is the character 與 — "together." We named it for a place where you sit across from someone and share. You've come all this way; I want you to feel at ease here. My mother always said that if something bothers you, it bothers others too. So we set your table before you arrive. When you walk in, I want you to feel: today, someone is taking care of me.
The moon on the sign has been with us since that first room. Here, the guest is the moon. Today we're in a 1960s hanok with a garden, and my sister-in-law is still at the tables. We call the person who brews with you the moju host. My sister-in-law was the first.
